DON ABERNATHY

PROFILE: Don Abernathy was born on October 5, 1905 in Coffeyville, KS. Abernathy worked with Pete Sandon for a meat market prior to entering the greyhound business. He died in June of 1987.

HISTORY: Sandon and Arch Degeer gave Abernathy his first greyhound in 1922. Abernathy was involved in coursing in Oklahoma during the 1920’s. He then retired from the business until 1951 when he got his first booking at the Black Hills Track. He also ran greyhounds at Mile High, Sodrac, Orlando, Sarasota, Tampa and St. Petersburg. He operated his greyhound farm in Guide Rock, Nebraska until his death.

ACOMPLISHMENTS: Some of his noteworthy greyhounds were TOMMY A, in the 1950’s, SILVER WORLD, in the 1960’s and FAST BUCK in the 1970’s. JUST DEB was named All America and All World and won the 1986 Guys and dolls Marathon at Biscayne.
