SAM GERARD

PROFILE: Sam Gerard started raising pups with a greyhound named CARDINAL in 1930. Mr. Gerard retired from greyhound racing in 1986. He received PIONEER recognition in 1986.

HISTORY: Sam Gerard raised greyhounds about six years before going to the track. His first track assignment was in 1936 working for Gerard Gary at Hollywood Greyhound Track, Hollywood, Florida. In 1937 he worked for T.J. Daniels. After three years in the army, Sam started his own kennel in 1946 at Orlando and Tampa. He went on to race at Daytona, Jacksonville, Orange Park, Moyock, NC, Denver, Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Cloverleaf, Portland, Ebro and Monticello. He retired in 1966. For some time Sam and four brothers were all in the greyhound business at the same time.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Sam Gerard’s success at the track included Stake wins at Jacksonville with MIKES CHOICE and NEIL HUNTER, Mile High with NORAS BEST and H L’S LORI, Cloverleaf with ROSELLA ROSE. She also won the Derby in Portland the same year.
