BOYD H. RHODES

PROFILE: Born in Springfield, MO on February 15, 1903

HISTORY: Boyd Rhodes’ uncle C.A. Rhodes had a kennel at the old Hialeah track and in 1926 Boyd went to work for him as a trainer. For the next 10 or 12 years, he recalls. I guess we raced everywhere there was a track to race. Many of the tracks where Boyd raced are no longer—some in the Chicago area and others in New York, Ohio, Louisiana and Washington. He also raced in Panama for three winters. Boyd made the transformation from trainer to track official in 1935 when he took a job as an associate and paddock judge in Nassau, NY. He then went to work at Hollywood, Florida as a presiding judge, and then later took the same job at Southland. Other tracks where Boyd has worked as an official are Revere, Mineola, NY, Council Bluffs Iowa, Biscayne, Pensacola, Moorhead City, NC Moyock, NC and Cloverleaf.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Boyd was presiding judge at Hollywood for 41 years, and has served as presiding judge at Southland for 22 years. He can proudly boast that he’s never missed a single performance of work in all his years as an official, clear back to 1935.
