E.C “BUTCH” SANDERS

PROFILE: “Butch” Sanders was born in 1878. Sanders was a butcher by trade in Gainesville, Texas and Scapula, Oklahoma before entering the greyhound industry. Butch Sanders passed away in 1944. In 1981 Butch Sanders was added to the PIONEER section of the Greyhound Hall of Fame.

HISTORY: It was 1925 when butch Sanders entered the greyhound business. Sanders was at the Metairie Ridge Kennel Club in New Orleans with the O.P Smith organization. In 1926 Sanders left the Smith organization to work with Homer Ellis at Six-Mile Creek racetrack in Tampa, FL. From there Sanders operated kennels at many of the racetracks in Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey and New York. Sanders was operating a racing kennel in Hollywood, Florida in the early 1940’s when he retired.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Butch Sanders had good track greyhounds and coursing greyhounds. GYP THE BLOOD II won the Derby at Taunton in 1928. 1926 was a monumental year at the National Meet for Sanders, MARY LENE won the All-Age and PRINCESS MEADOWN ran second to the great TRAFFIC OFFICER in the Futurity.
