GEORGE SAUNDERS

PROFILE: George Saunders was born in November 1910 in Beloit, Kansas. Saunders went to the racetrack in 1927. George Saunders passed away November 1965. In 1981 Saunders was added to the PIONEER section in the Hall of Fame.

HISTORY: George Saunders first racetrack experience was with Ralph Noah also from Beloit, KS. Saunders went to California for Noah as his trainer. Saunders spent the rest of his life in the greyhound industry. Saunders raced greyhounds at many of the first racetracks in the country, Brimfield, OH, Taunton, MA, West Memphis, AR, Council Bluffs, IA and many tracks in Florida and Colorado. Saunders spent his final years in the industry working as an employee for the racetracks in Naples Florida and Monticello, Florida.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: George Saunders supported both segments of the greyhound industry. He trained greyhounds to race and he worked as a racetrack employee. Saunders also raised six children, with the help of his wife Elizabeth. Two of these children remained in the industry. One was a trainer while the other was a track employee. MELANCHOLY was one of Saunders’ nicest greyhounds, winning the Sarasota Inaugural for him.
