PAUL SUTHERLAND

PROFILE: Paul Sutherland was born June 15, 1904 in Mayfield, KY. Southerland began his greyhound career in 1928 and retired as a kennel owner in 1970. In 1981 when he was added to the PIONEER section, Paul and his wife Nola still raised pups in Coral Gables, FL.

HISTORY: Paul Sutherland saw his first coursing meet near Parsons, Kansas. A few years later Sutherland met a number of owners and trainers while he was working at a meat market in Tulsa, OK. Soon Sutherland had his own kennels racing at the two Tulsa racetracks. In 1931, Sutherland went into the business on a full-time basis. Through the years Sutherland has raced kennels in practically every state that has had greyhound racing. “We never lived in the same house for a full year the first 27 years we were married,” his wife said at one time.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Paul Sutherland’s most famous greyhound was the 99-race winner BEACH COMBER, who was inducted into the Greyhound Hall of Fame in 1966. Sutherland also owned and raced the great NO REFUND who was Beach Comber’s brother. Sutherland usually had a strong racing kennel wherever he was racing. Sutherland was a member of the NGA Half-Century Club, having been a member for over 50 years.
