W.D. “GIG” VIOLA

PROFILE: W.D. Viola was born March 9, 1909 in Abilene, Kansas where he resided until his death at age 77. He joined the National Coursing Association in 1933 and was a member until 1975. Gig, a well known breeder, operated a stud farm and feed store in Abilene, Kansas. He was married to Leone Reed on June 19, 1931. They raised two daughters on the farm in Abilene.

HISTORY: Mr. Viola was associated with his father-in-law, James Reed, for a number of years, raising and racing greyhounds under the name of Reed Rural Kennel of Enterprise, Kansas. Gig and his wife, Leone, decided to try it on their own and purchased a female named RUBY RHV, which produced some fine brood stock. Other greyhounds Gig raised and raced were: NEW SON, IRRESISTABLE, ROYAL TRAVELER, INDISPENSABLE, and COUNT PASSPORT. Gig was in the grocery business with his brother on what was called Viola corner in Abilene.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Gig raised and stood at stud, NEW WORLD as well as standing the great Hall of Famer, RURAL RUBE at stud for Bud Carroll. Mr. Viola swerved on the executive committee of the National Greyhound Association from 1963 to 1966. He was involved in getting the Association headquarters located in Abilene.
