BOYD WATKINS

PROFILE: Boyd Watkins was born February 5, 1913 at Lavon, Texas. From him home’s second story window, seven year old Watkins would watch his neighbor’s greyhound’s hunt jackrabbits in nearby wheat fields. During his senior year of high school he played football, later playing at North Texas State in Denton where he continued his education. He suffered a knee injury in his first game at NTS. He also played professional baseball for three years. He married Emil Smith in 1933.

HISTORY: In 1935, Watkins bought his first greyhound, BUTTERFLY, for nine dollars. She was bred to Jess William’s track dog and produced eight puppies which the Watkins’s would use to hunt rabbits. When inducted into the Navy in 1945, Watkins sold all but one dog which his wife cared for. After returning home, his first litter of track dogs was from KEY RINGS and SAILING SILKS, with each puppy making grade A. Watkins attended his first National Meet in 1952 and continues to return to each semi-annual affair. The Watkins’s farmed and raised greyhounds near Lubbock, Texas for 16 years before moving to Brownfield where they continue this operation.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Watkins’s greyhound, B’S RED FLAME, was the futurity winner in coursing. Others included DOUBLE DENT, senior stake track winner, and WATER GATE BUG, ANGRY BARRON, DAISEY HONEY, and ADRIAN TEX, all track winners.
