T.L. “DAD” WEAVER

PROFILE: T.L Weaver was born in Murray County Georgia on March 22 1879. Weaver married Elvira Loughridge of Eaton Georgia in 1897. With his brothers John and Sam, TL started a portable sawmill. TL and his wife moved to Alabama and then to Louisana. The lumber business continued to grow and soon there were vast timber holdings. TL Weaver passed away in 1951, he was added to the PIONEER section in 1979.

HISTORY: In the winter of 1924-25 Weaver joined a group of civic minded leaders and businessmen in financing the building of the St. Petersburg Kennel Club. Weaver became president and general manager of the Kennel Club shortly after its organization and the start of racing January 3, 1925. “Dad” continued in that capacity until the late 1940’s when he was elevated to the post of chairman of the board, he did however retain the general manager status.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Known as the “Grand Old Man of Greyhound Racing” T.L Weaver was instrumental in the growth of St Petersburg Kennel club and its historic role in the sport. St. Pete is the oldest continuous operating race track in America. In 1950 Weaver planned and built the $750,000 Derby Lane plant in St. Petersburg which won him the honor for “the outstanding contribution to greyhound racing in 1950” by the Greyhound Writers of America.
