PROFILE: James H. Yarborough graduated from Iowa State in 1923 with a degree in veterinary medicine and a masters in physiology. His first job took him to South Carolina but by the early 1930’s Yarborough had moved to South Florida where his association with the greyhound industry began. Dr. James Yarborough was added to the PIONEER section in 1985.
HISTORY: Early in his medical career, James Yarborough became involved in racing. By 1932 he was working both for greyhound tracks in Miami Florida and for horse tracks. In those early days of racing Dr. Yarborough and Happy Stutz were partners in a hurdle dog called BUSY AMERICAN. The dog ran loose at Yarborough Animal Clinic, except on race days when Happy would come by to take him over to the track. For many years Dr. Yarborough was the veterinarian for Biscayne Kennel Club, Flagler Kennel Club and Miami Beach Kennel Club. Yarborough’s wife Kitty states her husband still does a lot of surgery on greyhounds and that she knows he will never retire.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Dr. James Yarborough has treated some of the best greyhounds that ever raced and it may be safe to say he has treated more greyhounds than anyone else in his time. Included here is a short list of some of the great greyhounds he has had in his care: RURAL RUBE, FLASHY SIR, MAR DILLY, GRAVEL GERTIE, BEACH COMBER, ROCKING SHIP and MIXED HARMONY.
