Inductees: Kinto Nebo

1979 - Greyhound Hall of Fame Inductee

Greyhound racing abounds with rags-to-riches stories, but none 1s more remarkable than yours.

A cheap-grade racer at the smaller tracks in the late 1950’s, you were in little demand when a slight injury forced an end to your less-than-spectacular racing career. One prospective buyer of good reputation thought you unsightly and touchy, and wanted absolutely no part of you. Finally. You were purchased by a grocer from Westmoreland, Ks., named George Nihart, for the paltry sum of $250. Even then, some might have thought the price a little high.

It was such a degrading beginning for the female who would go on to become what many consider the greatest producing brood matron in the sport’s history as a brood matron, you produced 45 pups from seven different litters. Every litter included Grade A’s, with many of your pups competing in stake events. Your offspring were of such quality that you captured the Brood Matron championship in 1965.

By far your best pup was Westy Whizzer, who no doubt someday will join you and his sire Tell You Why, Imp. in the Hall of Fame. More importantly, your pups inherited your uncanny ability to produce, with six of your offspring Westy Whizzer, Westy Colonel, Westy Blubber, Wesly Kinto, Purled and Ablated, enjoying significant success during their producing careers

In 1977, only 9 years after your death, a study revealed your blood to be flowing through the veins of about one-third of the top-caliber greyhounds in this country. About half of the All-Americas and the Top 20 sires in that same period (late ’70’s) were your descendants. Practically all the superstars of racing in the late 1970s- Downing, P.L. Greer, Rooster Cogburn, Cousin’s Elite, Derek’s Cadillac claim you as an ancestor.

The most incredible part of your story is that your legacy grew to such proportions in three generations or less.

Rags-to-riches, to say the very least.
