Mutton Cutlet (Irish)
1974 - Greyhound Hall of Fame Inductee
No greyhound stands taller as a pillar to the breed than does Mutton Cutlet, ancestor to practically every Irish and English greyhound living today. Except for those greyhounds
with pure Australian bloodlines, every greyhound in America also descends from Mutton Cutlet.
Although whelped in England, Mutton Cutlet stood at stud in Ireland, where he proved to be the ideal outcross to all types of Irish-bred females. In his day, it was the abnormal number of winners which he produced in proportion to the total number of his registered stock that made his name so famous; He rarely failed to produce winners in practically every litter, either on the field or track. But it was succeeding generations, in Ireland, England and the United States, that won him the reputation as the greatest greyhound sire of all-time.
Prior to his sire career, Mutton Cutlet competed in the Waterloo events. His speed was impressive, and the 691b. star was runner-up in the Plate competition one season. But his coursing record was nothing to indicate the sire career that awaited him. Among Mutton Cutlet’s more illustrious offspring was Upsidesown, Imp., already enshrined in the Hall of Fame for his laurels as a sire and courser. Another of his sons was Larry Of Waterhall, Imp., sire of still another Hall of Fame great, Mixed Harmony. Mutton Cutlet became famous as the “Father of the Track Greyhound,” since it was his offspring that first dominated action in the new sport. But many Mutton Cutlet products were equally impressive on the coursing park as well.
Today, Mutton Cutlet is considered the most heralded name in the annals of greyhound breeding.
