Pecos Cannon

The Rural Rube winner in 1974 as the top sprinter in America, Pecos Cannon was victorious in 35 of 51 races and ran in the money 48 times, failing to place in only three races in his entire career.

Whelped on May 28, 1972, the male red brindle out of Annexed and Classy Babe was owned by Betty and Leroy Creek, was trained by Tony Huckfield, and raced for the Don Conatser Kennel.

At the age of 15 months, Pecos Cannon began racing at Molbile Greyhound Park in Alabama where he won the 1973 Puppy Derby and became the track’s win leader with a record of 14-4-1-1 even though he raced only half the season compiling just 20 starts. He then went to Palm Beach Kennel Club in Florida where he won the 1974 Match Race Series and was the Palm Beach Champion with a record of 21-2-3-2 in 31 starts, despite being injured and missing the last three weeks of the meet. On three different occasions, he joined an elite group of greyhounds by running the Royal Palm Course in under 30 seconds.

After an injury that ended his racing career, Pecos Cannon went on to an exceptional career as a sire. He was named Top Grade Sire Champion in 1979 and 1981, at the time joining only four other greyhounds to win two sire titles since 1957. He was in the top five of the stud standings for eight straight years prior to his death.

Among the greyhounds he sired was Labit’s Frederick, named to the All American team in 1981 and chosen as the runner-up to Unruly, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988, in the Flashy Sir balloting that year for the best distance runner in the country. Other outstanding racers Pecos Cannon sired were Pecos Outlaw, Town Champ, Billy Cannon and a host of others.
