1971 - Greyhound Hall of Fame Inductee
No greyhound in American racing history has ever dared to challenge the amazing breeding record you compiled, and most experts believe no greyhound ever will. You are the first greyhound to be inducted into the Hall of Fame strictly on your laurels as a sire.
Your illustrious story began at Newcastle, Australia, in 1951 when Jack McDonald bred his champion female runner, Mystery Rocca, to the Aussie canine celebrity, Chief Havoc. Even before your birth, Richard Stevenson of the United States had acquired all rights to you.
Your track record was mediocre at best-four wins, four seconds, and four thirds in 17 starts-nothing that would indicate the colorful chapter that was about to follow. But you were superior over the long courses, a quality you later stamped in the character of your offspring. Injury brought an abrupt halt to your racing days, and Stevenson brought you to the States when you were four years old.
The site of your sire career was the Clyde Lemon Greyhound Farm in Portis, Kans., and in the course of that career, you sired 3,537 registered offspring. From the years 1959 to 1965, you reigned as the nation’s leading sire, amassing countless records that may forever go unparalleled. In that era, your pups accounted for more than 22,000 victories.
You were in such demand as a sire that Clyde Lemon had to turn down as many as 10 prospective bookings a day. It wasn’t unusual to see five or six of your pups entered in the same race, or 40 to 50 of your offspring entered on an 11-race program. In a fitting gesture of your superiority, five of your offspring made the finals of the 1962 Wonderland Derby, which was won by your son, Color Smart.
During your nine years as a sire, you earned an incredible $93,200 in stud fees. Your achievements rate you far and away the All-Time Sire Champion of American racing.
