Inductees: Golden Sahara

1965 - Greyhound Hall of Fame Inductee

Your owner once challenged anyone and everyone to a $5,000 match race before the Waterloo Cup in Girard, Kansas, in 1931. No one took it; that’s how good you were.  A match race for a lesser amount was accepted. Well, you won it and went on to win the cup as well.

The years of 1931-1932 were brilliant for you as a coursing star. You won the National Derby in the fall of 1931 at Chapman, Kansas, and then divided the Waterloo Cup in the Spring of 1932 at Selden, Kansas. After that, you started racing at San Francisco and later El Cerrito, out of Oakland, where you set the 5-16ths record.

As a sire, you gained added fame. Some of your descendants include Sahara Son, who won the Waterloo; Sonny Sarah, runner-up in the National Futurity; Sonny Sahara, another Waterloo winner and a champion at Hollywood; and Desert Dawn, still another Waterloo winner.

To compare you to another greyhound would be like comparing John L. Sullivan with Jack Dempsey. In your day, it was doubtful if any American dog could have beaten you- so said your owner, veteran Arch DeGeer.
