Inductees: Lucky Roll

1965 - Greyhound Hall of Fame Inductee

When the greyhound breeding dice were cast, you were a “Lucky Roll.” You were the first greyhound to win as many as 60 races during the parimutual era of the greyhound sport.

A brindle bomb, you raced in the kennel of the late J.A. (Doc) Austin. You were whelped in September of 1931 from a mating between Australian Import, Just Andrew, and the English import, Mustard Roll.

Bringing together the bloodlines of Micawber and Mutton Cutlet, you were indeed destined to make an indelible stamp on the greyhound family of America. Your bloodlines then carried on through your son, Never Roll, and his grandson, Lucky Pilot. Ben Andrews and Perfect Roll were your littermates. Working as a team, you Austin stars broke in at Miami in 1933.  You ran 3rd to Ben Andrews in the 1934 Miami Beach Inaugural, but you came back to capture the Richard Memorial with your kennelmate Red Roll running second and Ben Andrews running 3rd. You highlighted that season by winning the track championship.

During your active days, there was some dispute as to which was the better greyhound- you, Ben Andrews or Red Roll. But with 60 triumphs to your credit, you were the standout. And, when retired to stud, you emerged “the great one.”

Of your many descendants, two are already enshrined in the Hall of Fame, Lucky Pilot and Flashy Sir. Lucky Roll, you now take your rightful place among the “Great Ones.”
