Kiowa Sweet Trey

A champion on the track, Kiowa Sweet Trey has made an even bigger impact on greyhound racing with his numerous accomplishments as a sire.

The red brindle was whelped in January of 2000 as a result of Kay Smith’s breeding of Oswald Cobblepot to TM’s Sweet Dream. Vince Berland bought half interest in the greyhound after the National Greyhound Association Spring Meet in 2001.

Kiowa Sweet Trey began his racing career winning 12 straight races at Wheeling Racetrack and accumulating a 16-1-0 record in 18 starts there. He went on to win the Inaugural and the All-Star Kennel Preview at St. Petersburg Kennel Club, and was named to the 2001 AllAmerica Team. With his promising future cut short by an injury, he ended his career with a record of 31-4-2-1 in 41 starts and was designated the 2002 Rural Rube Award winner as America’s best sprinter.

Kiowa Sweet Trey found a new career as a sire, winning the national sire title in 2007 and 2008 after being the runner-up in 2005 and 2006. In 2010, he became the all-time leading sire of greyhounds named to the All-America Team when his eighth offspring was chosen to that year’s squad. Two were named captains of their respective teams, Flying Stanley and Flying Coal City, who also were named as Rural Rube Award winners. Two of Kiowa Sweet Trey’s All-Americans, Flyin Bridgeport and Flying Coal City, also won the Flashy Sir Award as the nation’s best distance racers.

Kiowa Sweet Trey continues to impact the greyhound breeding world as a sire despite his death in 2009.
