Louis Derteen Jr.

Lou Derteen served for a quarter of a century as the General Manager of Southland Greyhound Park. Under his leadership, Southland Greyhound Park grew to be the number one greyhound racing facility in the United States in terms of both attendance and mutuel handle.

But Lou Derteen is not being inducted into the Greyhound Hall of Fame just for his many years at Southland. His career began in Florida, where he was instrumental in rewriting racing rules for the state of Florida. Lou Derteen helped open many tracks in Florida, as well as others in Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Kansas.

Lou Derteen was well respected by greyhound owners and trainers throughout the United States. His management style in regard to his employees, the greyhound men and women that raced for him, and the tens of thousands of customers that visited his racetracks is one that should be duplicated by managers of today’s racetracks.
